The best After using these on a whim, there really are no other brake pads I would use. Pros: Great in crappy weather Cons: they only come in this salmon color Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: April 06, 2013 Reviewed by: Jesse R., Oregon Was this review Helpful? No Better Pad for NW Great in the rain, these are also very beefy pads, very rigid and good on a touring bike with cantilever brakes. Pros: Can stop a bike in the rain loaded with gear. Cons: None so far. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: February 05, 2013 Reviewed by: Schmunk, PDX Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
I think these are my favorite Kool Stop brake pads; the shape of the pad seems to shed much more debris than the more squared ones do, they don't seem to wear down quite as fast as the thinline & cartridge ones do, and it's easy to mix and match washers and nuts to get them at a proper distance from the rim.
And they're Kool Stop pads, so they stop the bicycle even if the brakes themselves don't want to. Pros: durability
sheds debris instead of grinding it between the rim and the pad
easy to tweak the mounting hardware Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: January 21, 2013 Reviewed by: David P., Oregon Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Nothing better than these red guys! Stops wheels and quiet doing so. Pros: Great stopping power in all conditions compared to other pads with no sound when adjusted right. I use these on a tandem, front and rear and have held up nicely. Seems to avoid aluminum shrapnel bits from rims better. Great Price Cons: Threaded stud can be too long and sticks out. The best of the best I've been running the same pair of these for so long I've almost forgotten they're on my bike. Quiet, they work extremely well in wet weather.
Quality and a good price
Pros: price, wet weather use, the shape of the brake-pad is perfect for lower profile braking surfaces generally found on most 700c rim bands
Cons: they seem to come loose periodically. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: August 19, 2011 Reviewed by: Jason W., Georgia Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Excellent brake pads, just make sure the fronts retract enough to let you remove the wheel without deflating the tire, which can happen (and be a pain) on some cyclocross forks. I believe the salmon-colored pads are still made from the famous Scott-Mathauser rubber compound, which really -is- everything it's cracked up to be. I just installed these pads prior to an urban ride in San Francisco and I am very happy. My goal: stopping power. They delivered as I rode down some 20% grade hills, fully loaded panniers, heavy bike, me at 200# and my son skateboarding while pushing on my back alongside me to use me as a brake. Is that a test of stopping power? I'd say so! And they worked just great! Pros: Good grip
Price Cons: None Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: June 13, 2011 Reviewed by: Alan H., Washington Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
These are great pads, definitely a step up from stock. The lip does a good job of setting up for a nice toe-in. I got the salmon, great stopping power, even though I set up my shorty's a little 'loose.' Reviewed on: April 02, 2011 Reviewed by: L. D., Portland, OR Was this review Helpful? These are always a good choice. I use the red compound on all my bikes. its the softest, but stops great. Pros: soft compound, great stoping power Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: January 02, 2011 Reviewed by: Phil G., New York Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
I came across a set of Avid Shorty 6's for my Surly Crosscheck a few years back. The brakes needed new pads, and I was looking for a quality brake pad that wouldn't be too terribly expensive. These Cool Stop Eagle Claws fit the bill perfectly. They stop quickly, and I feel much more secure using them than I would have with any standard or lower-level brake pads. I did go for the black ones, which apparently do not have the same stopping power as the salmon. The only real drawback as that the pads are NOISY when I stop. Pros: Great stopping power, rugged and durable. Great value for the price. Cons: Noisy.
