Another Phil Wood Bottom Bracket Fan

Why anyone would hesitate to pony up the few extra dollars for this Exceptionally Functioning and beautifully crafted heart of the machine, I cannot imagine. Have mine on my commuter: 1990's Norwegian MTN hard Frame, Surly Long haul trucker front fork, Velocity Aeroheat wheels built in Universal's shop & Schwab Big Apples. The axle does not sag, the bearings are smooth as silk. If you are building yourself a ride, do yourself a favor and install Phil's slice of bicycle art in both form and function. Cheers!

Pros: Beautiful. Stainless Steel. Silky action for miles and miles 10K and going miles.

Cons: Really? You're going to fuss over the price and the BB tool purchase?

Approaches Perfection

The way Phil machines the flats on his square taper spindles has always sold me. Compared to Shimano, I would estimate a Phil Wood spindle has twice as much contact area for the taper seat, which is critical to long crank arm life and efficient power transmission. Then you have Phil's impressive bearing life and expansive range of fits to complete the package. People talk about Phil Wood service life in terms of decades; I have some personally that are old enough to vote.

Pros: Best taper fit I have ever seen
Great bearings
Wide range of spindle lengths and offsets

Cons: Requires specific installation tools
Upfront cost (still excellent value I believe)

Hidden Treasure

Sometimes the stuff you don't see is what makes everything else work, and work better.

So it is with the Phil Wood bottom bracket. When I installed my first one (I now have two; as soon as I can afford it, I'm getting a third.) my drivetrain--which consisted of high-quality components--felt smoother. And that's before it broke in.

I was surprised at how easy it was to install, and how little difficulty I had in setting up the chainline.

Getting this bottom bracket definitely brought me one step closer to having my ideal bike.

Pros: High quality construction. Ease of installation. Smooth operation.

Cons: High price. But if it lasts as long as I think it will, it will have paid for itself. And, if you're a weight weenie, you might quibble with its gram count, which certainly isn't excessive.
