Now you can quickly and accurately determine the wear and stretch of any chain with the Park Tool Chain Checker
Simply insert the Chain Checker’s pins into two links, lightly press the swing arm gauge, and then check the gauge window for an accurate reading
The CC-2 is compatible with all derailleur chains
For 9 and 10-speed chains, replace chain at or just before the 0.75% readings
For 11 and 12-speed chain, replace at or just before the 0.5% reading
Check with manufacturer for specific replacement instructions

Measurement tool better than go / no-go gauge

This Park CC-2 tool works fine - just read the instructions carefully. The pin on the blunt end goes in an outer half link. The pin on the pointed end goes in an inner half link. Apply light pressure to the rotating cam, and voila, a real measurement of chain stretch.

I tried three different chains and got repeatable results on all of them. Two were borderline shot - tool just paid for itself.

Any QA engineer will tell you that a measurement is 10x better than a go / no-go gauge (ie the Park CC-3) because if the chain passes, you have no idea by how much, and by the next time it might be too late.

Pros: An actual measurement tool.
Works on the bike, no need to remove chain.

Cons: Hard to read measurement window (thin and deep), but OK.
