a race tire that excels in gravel

I bought two Black Mambas to put on my hardtail 29er in preparation for the 2017 Lost and Found Gravel Grinder. Mine weighed 495 and 515 gm and inflated to 52 and 51 mm in width (@30 psi). The rear tire was punctured by a 2 mm-wide wooden stick during some practice rides near home. (Bamboo?) Though the Stans (as well as the stick) sealed the hole with no loss of air, I decided before the race to put on an old tire on the back, leaving the Black Mamba on the front. I did the 60 mile option at the L&F - 58 miles of rocky, blown out jeep tracks and some beautifully paved road. No flats, no nicks, no leakage from the Black Mamba despite the rocks and hitting 48 mph on one somewhat paved road. The amount of grip is amazing. If your bike's frame can handle 52 mm tires, this could be the best gravel tire around.

Pros: light, rolls fast, grippy, tough, mounts easily with a floor pump, tire casing is completely impermeable to air

Cons: impervious to rocks but not to bungee sticks; requires a test ride before the tire stops leaking air (apparently at the beads). Note: the rocks in the Sierra Nevada Mts where I rode these tires are not sharp like in the Flint Hills of Kansas.
