Xerxes

Update on my review, I find these tires to be extremely fast for studded tires BUT, I've had a few close calls with 2 wheel skids on ice. Had to get a foot down fast! never hit the ground though. Probably 20-40 more studs might fix the problem. i've also had a few pinch flats, running low pressure to get stud traction. I'm 230 lbs. and maybe 30mm. tires are too narrow for my weight aired down ( 40- 55 PSI, F-R ). I think that I'm going to get a set of Gravdals for the deep winter and keep the Xerxes for the early and late winter insurance, before the summers go back on! There is not one perfect all winter studded tire.

Pros: Super fast, light, durable ( second year ), mounts easy. Excellent early or late winter ( insurance ) studded tire.

Cons: A couple pinch flats when aired down for ice traction ( could be 6'-4", 230lbs. is too much ). Could use 20-40 more studs for Canadian winter. A little sketchy cornering on ice at speed. Gravdal might be better suited for deep winter, I'll let you know next year!

45nrth Xerxes folding studded tires

I've been riding to work, during winter too, and have used Suomi Hakka242 and M&G160 on 26" wheels. Recently, put together a new bike with 29"Xerxes light weight studded tires, WOW! They roll like summer tires (fast, smooth). They cut through snow and slush, a lot less likely to float (sometimes that could work against you). I tried riding without studs at first, after 5 wipe outs in 3 weeks, studs. I know the switch to 29" helps for commuters too, but now I'm about a half minute faster per mile ( compared to M&G's)!

Pros: Lightweight, fast, fairly low vibration, cuts though light snow and slush, just the right amount of light weight studs.

Cons: Cuts through sometimes when you'd be better off on top of the frozen crud.
