Jagwire Road Pro "Racer" Road Cable & Housing Kit - Includes Brake & Derailleur Cable/Housing

Great for road, less great for cross bikes

This was my first experience with this cable set after using Jagwire Hyper cables. The good is the slick coated cables and nice touches like thinner brake housing where it goes under the bar tape. The bad is that there is not enough material and parts for a CX bike. I bought this kit to build up a disk braked cross bike and even on the miniscule (44CM) frame I had barely enough gearshift housing to finish and came up 2 ferrules short. I also ran out of brake housing and had to use a different front brake inner
This would be great for a standard road bike and OK for a rim braked CX bike but comes up a little short with disks.

Pros: Very slick cable, nice detailing

Cons: not enough ferrules for top routed cables on CX bike, not enough brake housing for disk brakes, front brake cable is too short for disk

Decent cable set for the money

I purchased a couple of these kits one for my CX bike using DA7800 and one for my road bike on DA7900. The 7800 set seems to shift just fine. The 7900 set is a little sluggish. It works but its just not seemingly as crisp as the Shimano cables I took off.

Pros: Everything you need is included
I like the anti-rattle "things"

Cons: Maybe not as crisp of shifting as Shimano on DA7900.

The metal braid cuts clean every time.

Cons: I'm not very keen on coated cables.

Cables make a bigger difference than you'd expect. I bought the brake housing/cables for my Avid BB7 mechanical disc brakes on my mountain bike and was impressed enough to get these for my cross bike.

Pros: Smooth
Easy to set up (good instructions)

Cons: Special housing caps did not fit in barrel adjusters (cantilever brakes on a cross bike)
Coated cable slides well in housing, but can be a pain to tighten down at the brake/derailleur - slips too much!

Great kit! Comes with a huge amount of cable and housing that ended up being enough for multiple bikes! runs smooth in the housing and holds up great!

The Fix

Like it says on the Sheldon Brown website, "The great majority of service problems with brakes and gears are the result of cable friction, not deficiencies in the levers, calipers or derailers."
I used a Pedro Cable cutter to install this kit, a cable tool like this is a must as you have to cut through a very thick cable! Front brake cable I cut 4 times to get right and then was too short, hard to keep from fraying when sliding into the ferrules, contacted Jagwire and they sent me a replacement housing for free! Top notch company!

Pros: Awesome look and very solid cables, brakes feel very responsive, shifts way better, almost shifts by thought alone.

Cons: You should invest in a cable tool to install these. Must also use a nail to open the cut end and make opening smooth.

Complete set of cables I need for a new bike build. Got the yellow to go with the red and yellow scheme on my bike, but looks a little more green than yellow, but it'll work :) Looking forward to getting more time to ride and try these out, but so far so good!

Excellent quality

I have these on two different bikes and have had much success with these cables.

Pros: Complete kit for shifters and brakesets. The teflon coating is real slick and the cables run smooth.

Cons: I have had someone tell me that the teflon will load up in the cable housing as it wears, however; I have not encountered this issue with about 5,000 miles on my roadbike set.

A step up from Shimano

I installed this cable set on my older Shimano Ultegra equipped bike and it shifts and brakes great. I like the slick coating on the wires and the pre-installed cable ends (on one side). This is a step up from a standard Shimano cable set.

Pros: Several enhancements over Shimano
Plenty of housing

great Cable kit

Nice to find a good quality kit for under $40.

Pleanty of housing colors. I went with red which came with black cables. Looks cool on my bike.

The only thing that I don't care for are the brake housing furrels. Jagwire uses some wierd design called "POP". But I had other furrells laying around that I used.

Pros: Great price.
Good quality.
Cool colors.

Cons: Brake housing furrells.

Nice cable kit!

This was my first full re-cabling project, so I'm glad that the kit was complete with everything I needed. I will say that the instructions were largely useless. Nonetheless, the install went fine and my cross bike is shifting and braking smoothly.

thx for including step down housing ends

This is good if not great cable and housing but the thing i really like about this kit is that it comes with (or at least mine came with) some ferrules that are housing diameter on one side and then step down to a smaller diameter on the other.

I frequently see bikes that have ferrules fuzed with the cable stops that contain them. The step down ferrules included in this kit make that situation a non issue

Pros: good value, low friction cables and housing with everything you need

Cons: the blue derailleur and brake housing seemed to be slightly different shades.

Pretty, pretty, pretty

I bought the braided "silver" casing and am very happy with the looks. There is a clear coat on the outside of the braids to protect the strands from fraying and the color matches well with other silver components.

It has everything you need, but maybe a couple more cable end ferrules would be nice. I didn't know it included the ptfe coated cables, which was a bonus. The kit had plenty of housing to cover my road bike with a couple feet to spare.

Nice, high quality cable kit for road bikes. Comes with everything you need to change the cables and housing for your road bike! Housing length supplied and cable length are both generous. I have never tried any of the super expensive housing/cable options, because I have never felt the need to. The Racer kit strikes a great balance between price and performance and I doubt I will bother looking at higher end cable kits!

Pros: Good price to performance ratio. Lots of colors to choose from!

I was skeptical about all of the hype surrounding jagwire cables.

I still prefer Shimano cables, however...

I could not beleive how nice these housings cut! it was amazing.

no filing neccesary as with the shimano housings.



Pros: Good quality, they appear to perform flawlessly

Cons: Ferules are kindof cheapo, and the rub protectors dont wrap completely around the housing.

Great cable set, comes with everything you need. Nice to see the range of colours. While I haven't tried the higher end cables, we've opted to buy these sets rather than individual parts - everything is included and it makes a cable change-over very easy. For that price, we've opted to redo our cabling every couple of years rather than try to hit a higher-end set and hope it lasts.

A few of the ferrules and tips are very plastic. We've ordered a bulk pack of caps to take rather than using the ones that come with the pack.

Pros: Price, having entire package with all parts is useful

I love all the color options available for the Jagwire line--it allows you that extra customization.

While I see the EZ-Bend housing as a positive for many, modern components, it simply does not fly with an older, vintage build. I purchased this to complete a mid-80's Peugeot build with friction shifting and non-aero brake levers.

The actual cables provided were more than sufficient, but because the EZ-Bend housing was unnecessary (and would have looked stupid with non-aero brake levers), I ended up running out of the brake cable housing, which was a problem.

Pros: Good color options

Cons: Be wary of purchasing this for a vintage build, POP fittings seem pointless

These complete cable and housing kits are a great deal compared to buying the cables and housing separately. The kit comes with adequate housing, end caps, and ferrules. The narrower housing is intended to run along the handlebars when using STI-style shifters, so it may not be used if the cables are being used with a different shifter design (e.g. bar-ends).
