I liked my Chris King hubs. Then I got this tool and pulled them apart to service them. I am now a complete raving fan-boy. Both the tool and the innards of the hubs are marvels of quality machine work. Pulling the whole lot apart is easy, even enjoyable if you follow the instructions. The tool isn't really necessary though - most of the regular maintenance can be done without it and your lbs probably has one. It's great for the occasional tear-down or if you need to replace something.

Pros: It will make you want to buy more King hubs

Cons: It will make you want to buy more King hubs!

Chris King hub service tool

Oh Pete from Utah! I'm sorry he cut his fingers, but he shouldn't disrespect this good product with a stupid one star rating! 'knobby-tired' had the right idea, but he's more diplomatic than me ha ha. Chris King know what they are doing, and this tool comes with a comprehensive illustrated hard copy manual.
If you tend to drop things and cut your fingers with knives, perhaps this tool is not for you. On the other hand, if you have some mechanical aptitude and can appreciate nice things, you should be very pleased with it. Chris King also post how-to videos on their website and answer any tech questions if necessary no hassles.
Yes, some other hub makers claim they can be disassembled with an Allen wrench, but not always fully serviced. DT Swiss hubs can also use an allen key, OR the proper DT service tool kit! Do DT Swiss AND Chris King both not know what they are doing?? I'd say no.
My only whinge about the tool is that a different version is required for the R45 road hubs, but I know that isn't fair.
ps. a reputable bike shop should also be able to service CK hubs

Only the qualified should apply

If you are mechanically inclined I'd recommend this tool because it's impossible to rebuild the rear hub without it. A rebuild isn't simple, if you aren't a great mechanic take it to a shop for a rebuild.

Pros: Awesome quality that will last a lifetime.

Cons: Only for a good mechanic, but very nice if you are.

Chris King Servicing tool

Chris King has an amazing line of product. its so great that they give customers the option to totally rebuild their hubs, which to me is a great investment, as you will own the hubs for a very long time. King has tools to service all of their products. Its a great investment if you plan to keep your Kings for life

Pros: easy to use and looks great on your tool peg board.

Cons: price

A complex solution to a complex problem

You will need this expensive tool if you plan to do your own full maintenance on Chis King hubs. (I believe there are high quality hubs out there which can be fully serviced with an Allen wench.)
The instructions are confusing for the first time user, and lack an exploded view of the hub.

A bit of advice for the first time user:

Use a pliers or vice grip to hold the "extension tool" in place (on its knurled surface) when you use it to remove the large and small bearing. Otherwise it is difficult to supply sufficient torque. You will need a vise to perform full service on the drive shell. An expander washer wants to fall onto the floor and roll off somewhere.
Removing the split ring retainers is difficult. The instructions show a person using a folding pocket knife for this purpose. This is obviously dangerous, and a misuse of a knife. A knife is a cutting tool, not a split ring remover. I ended up needing stitches! The ideal tool for removing the split rings is a watch band installation tool, which is supplied with any cheap watchband. Just take care not to damage the rubber seals.

Pros: None, other than it is necessary if you want to service King hubs. It does get easier to use with practice. A helpful video is on YouTube

Cons: Expensive single use tool for expensive hubs. Poorly written, disorganized instruction booklet with inadequate diagrams. Hazardous and improper use of a knife is recommended in the instruction booklet. Get a watch band removal tool, and save your fingers. King should supply something like this with the tool
