Salsa skewer

Hands down, the best skewer I have found! Never really gave them much thought until I started riding SS. Older, other "S" brand was slipping in the rear dropout, causing the wheel to get out of alignment in the frame. Changed skewer and no more slipping.

Pros: Very well made, lots of leverage, Salsa quality

Cons: Cost, but you get what you pay for.

These are nice enough, but I honestly don't see what the fuss is about these skewers. They were the culprit behind a squeak from the rear wheel on my road bike. The aluminum contact points of the skewer were moving just slightly against the dropouts. I replaced with a shimano skewer, which has a nicer camming action and steel inserts on the inside faces and the problem was solved. Lots of folks really like the Flip offs, so mine must be an isolated case.

Pros: Shapely

Cons: There are better designs out there.

The standard for aftermarket skewers. Lots of great colours and quite bulletproof. The cam plate design is a little more prone to wear than shimano, but I'm yet to have one fail. Use on both rigid and suspension - no problems.

Pros: Colors, light, nice look

Cons: Long lever can get in the way - have to fiddle sometimes to find a spot to close it

seems a bit flimsy, but hasn't failed yet, also the lever curves in a bit far and bottoms on parts of the frame before it is tight, so you have to play around with its position

They do as they're told and don't quit. Lighter and easier to manipulate than the stock XT skewers. Color choices are nice.

A good choice

These are a good skewer--they hold nice and tight and work smoothly.

Pros: -Nice fit and finish
-US-made
-Stainless rod doesn't rust

Cons: The plastic bearing under the cam does take a "set" after repeated use. It'd be nice if they looked into a harder material like PEEK for that part.

Salsa makes beautiful skewers, in steel and ti. I opted for the steel for price reason.

Looks great on your bike and locks the rear wheel down tight. Good build quality from Salsa and the lever is comfortable to use. The design is a big heavy for the price.

The BEST! I have used these on all my bikes for many years, never had a problem. Locks perfectly. Handle is nicely shaped to tighten or loosen. Expensive but well worth it.

These skewers saved me hundreds of dollars

I have a pair of Bontrager Race Lite wheels that I was completely frustrated with. They are great climbers and stiff but they felt jittery and the rear wheel was prone to slipping in the dropout under climbing stress whenever I had the wheel off.

I was about to get rid of them and realized that the stock Bontrager skewers were weak pieces of junk. So rather than get new wheels, I tried the Salsa skewers first. The difference is like night and day - I'm keeping the Race Lites.

Extra credit for looking good.

Pros: Strong, sexy, great ergonomics.

Cons: None.

These skewers are great and look really good. They have a really positive and firm feel when you close them and the lever has a nice shape (unlike the Hopes). They seem to stay a lot smoother than other skewers too (short of closed-cam designs like Shimano).

Pros: smooth, firm feel and nice lever design, stays closed tight, lots of colour options

Cons: not that light for the price you pay

Is it ok to call a skewer sexy

The Salsa skewer has nice curves and functions great too. The plastic thingy that the lever cams against does get banged up a bit on the front wheel from repeated opening and closing for loading bike on rack. But still holding up after 2 years plus.

Pros: aesthetics, function

Cons: plastic thingy a little prone to wear

So far it's a good skewer. Light-ish, Very good lever. Looks very nice.

This is time tested design. These have been around for decades. Well made, durable, easy clamping/releasing and light weight. Lots of color choices.

Pros: A no brainer choice if you don't want to waste time trying to ferret out the "best."
