On-bike nutrition is something you have to try for yourself and adapt a strategy for. An individual choice, for sure.

For rides of an hour or longer, one or more bottles of Perpetuem made according to the directions (scoops per rider weight per hour) works very well for me and can be used to augment or replace eating "bars" or other things. Somehow, I prefer Perpetuem to Cytomax which I used for many years. I've used Perpetuem for 3 plus years.

Pros: Does not taste horrible (Dreamsicle)
Can help prevent the bonk
Does not contain bizarre, non-food ingredients
Does not have negative GI tract effects (your mileage may vary)
Does seem to help with muscle pain and recovery

Cons: Does not taste great (Dreamsicle)

Vanilla Orange - Good taste, and only the first time going down

I have switched to Perpetuem for all my rides after trying some from a friend. No more GI distress that you get from the gels, and no bonking on the rides anymore. Keep buying more and more every year.

Pros: No GI distress. Good taste

Cons: Seems kind of expensive, but it is worth it.

Works great, but don't let it get too warm in the bottle

I have used the vanilla/orange Perpetuem for a couple years. It works fantastic for training or events longer than 4 hours. I enjoy the flavor, although it is a bit chalky. When this stuff gets warm (+75 degrees) it obtains a bad, artificial flavor. Finish the bottle before it gets hot. The formula does not agree with everyone, so I recommend buying a single serving bag before buying a big bottle.

Pros: Sustained energy
Good flavor
Easy on my stomach
All natural

Cons: Unpallatable flavor when it gets warm in the bottle.

I haven't tried this stuff by itself, i mix it in with some hammer gel. Which seems to work great! I have also mixed it in with gel, and heed and that really saved my but at 24 hours of moab. I have heard that perpetuem doesn't sit well with everyone, so make sure to try it out first before racing with it. I really like all the hammer stuff.

Pros: give me long lasting energy.

tastes good and keeps you going when heed isn't enough. i use these on 4+ hour rides

Pancake mix

This stuff works well for long distance events and saved me in my first every solo 8hr race. The downside to this product: It is like drinking pancake batter! Takes a bit of getting used to, and if you can suck it down, it works well. Be careful not to combine this with simple sugars (no gatorade or coca cola or other sources high in sugar) or be prepared for the worst gut-rot of your life. Every bump will hurt! Most will appreciate having a spare bottle with cool refreshing water to wash this down.

perfect for long rides

I'm not a racer, just like long rides, and this is a great, light fuel to bring along. The orange flavor is mild, no bad at all.

The orange-vanilla Perpetuem is my favorite trail fuel. I mix it thick in a small bottle. It really helps on the three plus hour rides when I usually hit the wall.

Pros: Tastes good and easy to digest. Really helps energy levels on long rides.

Cons: Expensive, only reason for 4 star rating.

Made my stomach upset the first tim I used it. Played around with the concentration now its good to go. Not for everyones stomach
