SRAM Cassette

Interestingly designed cassette. The machining of the large steel block to get the cogs is top notch. It is beautiful, a true work of art. The largest cog being aluminum doesn't bother my either as it is much thicker, and shouldn't see too much torque. However, I really don't like the way it contacts the freehub body. The aluminum cog has a sleeve that the steel parts sit on, but the aluminum sleeve only has contact with the freehub grooves near the largest cog. This is just a bad design. Since most freehubs are Aluminum (soft) and there is a tremendous amount of force exerted on them from the cassette, you need to reduce the local pressure by spreading out the force as much as possible. This is the opposite idea, not sure what it is based on.

Pros: Light weight, high quality machining.

Cons: Bad design for freehub contact points.

Nice while it lasted

Worked very well for awhile, but I'm not a particularly strong rider, this isn't my only bike, I was out with an injury for 4 months, and it still didn't last for a year. 1st and 2nd cogs won't hold on steep climbs, appear wavy/bent (but hard to tell from the ramps).

Pros: Light weight, works well when new

Cons: Very expensive
Wears quickly

SRAM XG-1080 Cassette

I'm totally happy with this cassette. It's light, shifts well and offers the 36T capacity I needed for my 1x10 29er setup. Not cheap, but still a worthwhile investment.

Pros: Light, 36T capacity

Cons: Expensive
