Thomson X4 Stem
The design team for the new Thomson 31.8 stems had a tough goal: make a stem better than the Thomson Elite Road and Mountain Stems. Early tests showed us that our competitors’ 31.8 stems were heavier and weaker than Thomson Elite 25.4 and 26.0 stems. At Thomson our new stems were not done until they were stronger, lighter and longer lived than the legendary Thomson Elite.
The new Thomson X4 for Mountain and X2 for Road allow you to realize the benefits of stiffer forks and stiffer 31.8 bars. They offer precise steering, tracking, and more control while riding, all wrapped up in a beautiful design.
The Thomson X4 is stronger and 30 grams lighter than the Thomson Elite 25.4 mountain stem. It features a traditional steerer clamp that is shaped to save weight and to be knee friendly. Light enough for Cross Country or Road is only part of the story. The X4 is absolutely the best combination of strength and weight available. Thomson stems are the strongest in the industry, meaning freeride and downhill riders can run Thomson confidently.

Thomson X4 Stem Thomson makes a great product. They machine aluminum down to weights that compete with carbon. All of my mountain bikes have this stem. Pros: Great finish, super stiff, plenty light. I really like Thomson stems. The high quality machining makes them easier to install without over tightening. The smaller Allen bolts are designed to help here. They will strip before you over tighten them and crack the face plate etc. You should still use a torque wrench. I've not had any problems with slipping even at lower than recommended torques. Pros: Beautifully finished with high tolerances so fitting to torque spec is much easier. No slipping. Cons: This is not a cheap stem. But why buy a cheap stem for expansive bars? Thomson stuff is great Can't deny that Thomson stuff is the bees knees. Looks cool and they all last a long time. Not to mention they have thousands of different sizes/lengths/designs to dial in your ride. You can tell this is a quality product when you hold it. Clean lines and solidly constructed. Pros: Bolts on the steerer tube are low profile so you don't knock your knees.

Thomson Elite X1 I bought this to replace the stock Cannondale stem when I upgraded the fork. Bought off the Thomson name and reputation and it didn't dissapoint. Fit and finish were flawless. Has held up to the abuse that I could throw at it very well. After many rides and cleanings the hardware does not show any signs of corrosion. Holds everything securely and safely together. ROCK SOLID... Solid and sexy and make sure you get the newer Thompson that has both names upside down so u can flip it if you want to go 0 degree rise. Can't do that with many stems this solid. Fit and finish is perfect. Never having to worry about your stem is nice, as is the bling factor. It's overkill in the best possible way. So far so good with a Carbon Handlebar. The best stem out there! Nice oversize stem that is carbon steerer and carbon handlebar friendly. The redesign on the new oversized (31.8) Thomson is fantastic! I have been running Thomson stems and seat posts for many years now. I usually end up changing bikes or frames and can always re-sell my Thomson gear for close to what I paid. Pros: Precision made, quality durable finish and hardware. It's a thomson so you know it'll hold up. Looks great and one of the few stems I could find in an 80mm length with 0 degree rise. Looks great along with my thomson seatpost and seatpost clamp. Nice machined Aluminum Nice Aluminum, but nowadays everything is going carbon. Al is likely more reliable though. Thompson has nice selection of sizes, fit / finish is first rate. Super strong, Classic look No compromises in strength or looks. Small compromise in weight.
If you want a set-it and forget-it stem -- which is pretty much exactly what most folks want in a stem -- Thomson delivers.

I feel like the Thomson reputation is well earned and essentially speaks for itself, right? I've run versions of this stem for the past four or five years on both a Turner Flux (more XC/enduro) and a Turner Spot (more trail/all mountain), and I've never had a single hint of an issue. Pay attention to the torque specs during the build, and you should be fine. Bottom line? If you're willing to spend $80+ on a stem, and the stem you're looking at -isn't- a Thomson, I'd reconsider . . . and get the Thomson. Simple is better Like the simplicity of this stem. Not flashy or as light as carbon, but well made and can take a beating. Haven't had any issues using it on alloy or carbon bars as long as you follow torque specs. Pros: Durable, simple, well made Cons: Price? You get what you pay for though... Solid performance I have totally abused this on DH crashes and hammering on SS. This is bombproof and will not slip. I learned to loosen a little to keep from braking DH bars but this stem never fails. Pros: Death grip on the fork tube and handlebars. Super durable finish looks good way down the road. Easy to resale if you change sizes. Cons: Not really a con, but it would be cool if it came with titanium bolts.
