Paul Components Chain Keeper
> Chain Guides & Guards
- Mounted in place of a front derailleur, the Chain Keeper works with single and 1x_ multi speed drivetrains using a narrow chain. The chain block surrounds the chain as it meets the chainring and prevents it from skipping off.
- Accommodates a range of chain line measurements and chainring sizes
- Not designed for downhill/freeride/big hit use
- The Chain Keeper BB attaches to frames with outboard bottom brackets. This allows the Chain Keeper BB to be used with full suspension frames, carbon fiber frames, frames with eccentric bottom brackets, and frames with non-standard tubing.

expensive This is a nice chunk of aluminum for keeping my pants out of the teeth on my chainring. It would also help keep the chain from derailing, but I didn't really have that problem.
I use it with a Problem Solvers Direct Mount, and with that set-up, it's infinitely adjustable for precise positioning. It's designed well, and able to adjust for different chainlines. I found this rather frustrating to set up initially, but once it is set I don't have to touch it as long as I don't change chainring sizes. The problem is there is one bolt that allows/holds three different axis of movement. Every time I'd tighten the clamp I'd lose my positioning on at least one axis.
Also, the clamp is a little bulky/clunky - a lower profile, hinged design would be nicer.
I've got mine on a 1x9 road/gravel bike.
Pros: Looks good, made with precision, works perfectly when set up correctly. Cons: Hard to dial in adjustment, clunky clamp. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: April 12, 2013 Reviewed by: Brad M., Washington Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
I set this up on my Surly Karate Monkey after I got tired of dropping my chain all the time with it set up 1x9. After making a few tweaks, I got it just right and I'm not getting any chain rub. Haven't dropped my chain since, so I'm giving this 5 stars. Super simple to set up and looks great. Pros: Looks cool. Easy to set up. Cons: Had to take off my bash guard. Very happy with this purchase. Keeps my chain on the chain ring. Very well constructed and easy to set up. I used zip-ties between the top and sides to keep the cover straight while tightening everything up. Would recommend use of clear bra under the mount, so it doesn't mess up your paint. Pros: -Works great.
-High quality.
-Simplicity is usually the best design ;-) Cons: -Can scratch up your frame.
-Can be noisy if the chain likes to bounce off it.
-If you are running a small chainring (32-34T) it can be difficult to set up. It mounts low, so you must set it high enough to clear the spider. This is an attractive, well designed product that has eliminated all of the chain drop issues for my 1x9 setup with 11-32 cassette and 38t chainring on a Long Haul Trucker. However, as mentioned by others it is a bit narrow. I had to true my chainring (bent it with a large adjustable spanner) before the rubbing ceased. I also find it to be a bit finicky to adjust because the same bolt that fixes the position vertically on the seat-tube is also responsible for fixing the position laterally, and for fixing the tilt. Everything has to be just so before the bolt is fastened, and not move at all while it is fastened.
Pros: Looks great, works perfectly Cons: low tolerances, could be easier to adjust Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: June 14, 2012 Reviewed by: Joseph Y., Washington Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Not great for me This is a nice chainkeeper for some bikes but not mine. I have a large downtube that interfered with me getting the proper placement for this because I wasnt able to tighten the bolts. I was able to order an extension directly from Pauls and make it work by mounting it high on seat tube but it takes away from it's simplicity and makes it as expensive as other options. Pros: Good price if it works for your bike, nice Pauls quality. Cons: Won't work for everyone, no hole in guide as pictured. best chain keeper out there Best chain keeper in my opinion. tried a few and the chain kept jumping on my 1x9.
I have the Paul on two bikes and have no problems Pros: light weight
keeps chain on 99% of the time Cons: a bit pricey Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: January 20, 2012 Reviewed by: Joaquin E C., New Jersey Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
works perfectly running a 1x9 with a blackspire 46 and a dura ace 11x23. also using a 9 speed 7700/xtr chain. set up was cake. no rub what so ever! the guide is cut narrow in the front and wider in the rear. this gives room when running up and down your cassette and your chain changes angles. be sure to run the rear high enough so the chain does not rub on top of the guide when in the largest cassette gear. it also looks nice and clean. although the black anodization is a little blotchy. thinking about sanding and polishing the aluminum (since my frame is polished). also mine did not have the cool hole on the side plate as pictured (not a big deal). Pros: easy adjustment (15 minutes or so if you work on your bike a lot). no rubbing with a 9 or 10 speed chain. another beautiful product from PAUL ( i also have their brake levers) Cons: sloppy anodization, the black is blotchy. it could be just a fluke, yours will be okay. Very fussy fit I set it up on a 1x8 gearset, but could never get it into a position where it would not rub when I was out of the saddle going up a hill.
I suspect it would work better with a 9-speed or 10-speed chain. Cons: too narrow for 8-speed chains? Would Buy Again: No Would Recommend: No Reviewed on: March 23, 2011 Reviewed by: David P., Oregon Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Clean design and does the job. But if you are using a 32t chainring with standard 104mm bolt circle diameter, you will run into interference with your crank spider before you can get the chain keeper as low as it should be. It will still work, just maybe not as well.
The clamp also looks kind of chunky, they could probably have taken some more material out of there, but what do I know? Pros: Works, subtle looks Cons: Interference with crank spider when used on 32t chainring and 104mm BCD. Paul Chain Keeper Paul's components are top notch. this chain keeper's quality is a work of art. the adjustment options to line up on chain ring is easy and has great clearance for chain. I havent had any problems with any of Paul Components. This is a great idea, but;
This thing really could be better designed. If your using it with a multi speed rear end, its GOING to make noise no matter how its adjusted.
A 9 speed chain almost seemed too wide, and ground on the cage all the time. adjustment is stupid. the cage should be able to float from side to side. but I am sure they (paulcomp) will figure that out some day. Pros: Nice Paul comp quality
Looks cool Cons: Lack of functionality
A Half link in your chain will rip the cage off
Is this sort of thing even necessary? Would Buy Again: No Would Recommend: No Reviewed on: January 24, 2011 Reviewed by: Charles G., Washington Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Clean, simple chain keeper on my rigid 29er. Tight fit, but no rubbing noise on my 1x9 setup. Fits any size chainring. Like Ron Popiel says--"Set it and forget it!" Leave it to Paul to come up with a simple way to keep your chain on your ring. This is very easy to install and align. Pros: Nice, simple, works. Cons: May not fit around some larger diameter tubes.
There is a Chain Keeper that attaches to the BB
for those applications now. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: September 22, 2010 Reviewed by: DB, Michigan Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Simple and effective. Takes some time to adjust to prevent chain rub, but once set, it's set it and forget it. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: September 15, 2010 Reviewed by: Andrew K., MI Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
