Continental Race King 29er Tire
> Tires
- The Race King has presented itself as a talented newcomer in the best way possible - with victories! Irina Kalentieva - Topeak/Ergon took the first prototype to the podium at the 2007 UCI World Cup Championships. The secret of the Race King is a large volume casing mated to a low-profile tread pattern that not only spells speed, but also incredible all-round traction and control. Paired with the proprietary Black Chili compound, and weighing in at a scant 460g (2.2 SuperSonic), the Race King will impress through an incredibly wide variety of conditions.

Perfect rear tyre, very fast rolling. Knobs are to small to be a front tyre here in the north east. My setup is Mountain king upfront and this one as rear. Installed them tubeless on Havens but needed to use a compressor. They are very durable in my experience. Pros: durable Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: May 05, 2012 Reviewed by: Daniel M., Rhode Island Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Terrible Tire This tire has two HUGE problems:
1) The profile is very rounded so the side knobs are all but useless for fire road descending where you're in flat turns at speed which means you either scrub tons of speed or you crash...it's that simple.
2) The sidewall is paper thin. I have these setup tubeless (I didn't have any problem getting them to seat or hold air like some have) and they seemed fine at first. After about two months of riding, the rubber had sufficiently softened to the point that the tire was laterally rolling over about .5 - .75 inches through any kind of turn at speed. This rollover effect caused the rear end the bike to feel completely unstable and allowed the tire to burp frequently and at some very inopportune moments.
The problem got so bad that I could easily replicate the problem in a flat parking lot at very low speeds with 35+ PSI.
Bottom line, this is NOT a good tire and absolutely not worth the money. Would Buy Again: No Would Recommend: No Reviewed on: April 29, 2011 Reviewed by: Chris M., California Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
German tire goodness! I have this tire on the rear of my RIP and it performs admirably. The low center tread rolls fast. The round-ish profile transitions smoothly to the side knobs that offer up great grip. Easily converts to tubeless. Pros: good smooth rolling tread design Cons: none I can think of. Impressive I have these on my Karate Monkey, which is dual-purposed for dealing with snow and ice commutes, and of course as much trail riding as I can get in and these have gone well beyond my expectations. The mini-snowstorm that crippled the less than snow-savvy Seattle area just before Thanksgiving was a blast for me. I was able to get all over Seattle, not just on my commute but in the mad search for snow chains for the car. I thought I would do the occasional slip and slide with how icy it was, but these babies gave me mad control. Didn't fall once and I probably did 60 miles. I didn't even have my rear brake yet when the storm hit, and still I was able to navigate around the wrecks and the stopped traffic on the 1st ave S bridge and everywhere else. Not only that but these rip through the thick mud and horse poo on the trails around my house. When the trail gets windy and roots and rocks pop up around corners these babies hold the line I set them to, daftly maneuvering me around them unscathed, so far at least! They definitely live up to their name and description, and they are easy to mount unlike some mountain tires I've faced. Pros: The list goes on and on, see above. This tire has plenty of traction for most conditions. The size is spot on and has a nice supple ride to it. Pros: True to size.
Fast rolling. Cons: Not the best in muddy conditions. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: September 22, 2010 Reviewed by: DB, Michigan Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
A favorite rear tires and decent pair for XC when the conditions are right. Kenda SB8 might be a slightly better rear roller, but Race King seems to be longer lasting and more durable. Pros: Great roller. Cons: Little slippery up front in marginal and loose conditions.
