This tool is a must for servicing many SPD pedals. It only cost a couple of bucks and it has worked great for me.

I do wish Shimano would of included this with new pedals (its cheap) or at least designed the pedals with flats for a wrench though.

Review for TL-PD40 pedal locknut - annoyed at Shimano to need this and not just use flats for a regular wrench! With this tool rebuilding pedal is easy. Plastic tool, has worked for several uses but not confident it's durable, unfortunately as with many special tools there is no alternative. Have tried vice grips etc, don't work.

Cons: Long term durability doubtful

Don't even think about disassembling your shimano pedals without this tool, a set of pliers will pretty much destroy them. This cheap little tool does the job very nicely.

Pros: Cheap, does the just nicely.

Cons: None

I am not quite sure how this thing works

I wanted to service the fleet of SPD pedals we have. However, I have not been able to figure out how to take them apart with this tool. I put it over the splines and unscrewed. All it did was crack the O-ring on the shaft and tighten two parts of the pedal together.

I am generally a pretty good mechanic, but these pedals were simply not worth the hassle, so I gave up.

Pros: It was the only way for me to turn the splines. It only cost a couple of bucks. (3 starts for that)

Cons: I still managed to mess up and the pedals are not really worth servicing. (this is more a fault of the pedals, but I couldn't go more than 3 stars overall)

TLPD40 review

I'm normally pretty thorough on these reviews, but this one doesn't really require much - it works. It opened up the pedals with little effort. There does seem to be a bit of sliding if you don't lock-on perfectly, but it's better than using an improvised tool.

Affordable tool that is compatible with many pedals.

Pros: Really affordable, compatible with Shimano pedals but also with Mavic road pedals (at least the model I have). The tool has indications of where to turn.

Cons: It would be nice there would be a higher quality option made of a material different than plastic.

This is my favorite shimano pedal axle-locknut servie tool

seriously. don't bother with the XTR version of this tool. save your money for booze and hookers. buy this NAU!

Pros: the ridged edges make handling this tool a DREAM!

Cons: I'm constantly dismantling my pedals just so I can use this tool. It's just that great. I go around the mission district looking for a pedal I can take apart so I can get my TL-PD40 fix.

This tool is an absolute must for shimano pedals with a 10 spline axle lock nut. it works great put it on axle lock nut and turn.
