don't overlook your stoppers!

So often it seems that it easy to throw cheap, generic brakes on an otherwise solid build, figuring they'll work anyway. These Sora brakes are inexpensive and work like a charm. They center themselves beautifully, and are very easy to set up. They also spring back very nicely and feel solid. I have had no problem with these since my purchase.

Pros: Excellent shaman brakes at an easy to swallow price point.

Cons: None.

It is unfortunate that the BR-3400 comes with one-piece brakes, because that means you end up throwing out perfectly good mounting hardware when the pads finally wear out, but that's really the only thing I can find objectionable about these brakes.

They're visually quite massive, and might look out of place on a spindly steel frame, but they're good brakes and you won't even notice that they're more of a matte silver finish than a high-polish finish after you've put a few hundred miles onto them.

Cons: they don't come with cassette brake pads

A decent brake for cheap. The pads wear a little fast when they are wet but they stop pretty well.

Pros: Stop fast

Cons: pads wear fast

Sora Brake

Good simple brake for average rider.

I usually prefer higher end drive train components, but this is a great brake for the price.

In my opinion, this is just as good as the brakes on most new road bikes in the "under $2,000" range.

However, it could use some better pads.

Pros: Great functional replacement brake (best deal for the money).

Cons: Could use better pads.

Does the Job

Don't be ashamed for thinking about this. This Sora component may not get you laid, but you can ride home alone from the bar and know you can blast downhill safely, thanks to Shimano's smooth dual-pivot action.

Of course, if you did strike out, the money you didn't spend buying a drink or two could be well spent on a brakeset with cartridge pads -- but not a lot more than that.

Pros: Reliable braking

Cons: Crappy one-piece brake shoes
