You'd think that these being the cheapest bottom brackets at Universal Cycles would make them the worst. Far from it. I'm sure they're heavier than the more expensive offerings, but in the grand scheme of things a few extra grams of non-rotating weight won't break the bank.

I've installed four of them on various bicycles, and between them all they've seen about 24,000 miles. One of them started -- after 12,000 miles -- to make funny clunks, so I replaced it with a different BB. That one disintegrated 4500 miles later, so it was back to another UN26 for the replacement.

About the only thing I don't like about the UN26 is the plastic nds cup. When I took the funnily clunking BB out to replace it the plastic cup came out in 4 pieces, which was more than slightly annoying given that the cost of a replacement cup was more than the cost of a new UN26.

But aside from that, this has become my bottom bracket of choice for all purposes.

Fits the Bill

Exactly what I needed. Such a simple part that you depend on so much. Why spend more when this does the job?

Extra length

I needed a longer spindle to put a road double on a small MTB. The existing bb spindle wouldn't let the pedals clear the chain stay. The longer spindle did the trick.

Pros: Super low price

Cons: I never trust that plastic cup, but the price is too good to pass up.

Good in general, wish they could skip the plastic cup

It seems like these guys always fail when the plastic cup cracks. They're otherwise a perfectly adequate bottom bracket. I'm not sure I'd recommend them for heavy riders or heavy bikes. I break these things too often.

Nice replacement unit.

I bought this to replace a really crunchy loose bearing style bottom bracket. It is considerably smoother. Replacement is more cost effective than cleaning/repair.

Pros: Cheap upgrade/replacement.

Cons: Some say the plastic collar is a con. I'm not sure it is. I've seen enough bikes that came with this type stock, and that little bit of plastic hasn't been the failure point.

Cheap and bullet proof

I'm a pretty big fan of the square taper system. This is the best deal for square taper bb. It will run for years without needing any maintenance. I haven't had any issues with the splines rounding either.

Pros: Cheap, reliable. Works.

Cons: I don't like black spindles.

For the budget minded cyclist, this is a great bottom bracket. Smooth bearings, easy rolling, no tension or drag or binding anywhere - love this BB. Easy to install in a properly faced and chased shell - fit in to my wife's Soma mixte frame perfectly with no problems.

Cheap, solid workhorse

this BB will treat ya well for years to come. It's awesome with the exception of the plastc (????) cup. I've never had any problems with it, but I can see how it could easily break during installation.

Pros: cheap, works well

Cons: plastic cup

Heavy, but works well

I have this BB on a few of my bikes - and what is there more to say than "it works". Always trusted, never fails - this BB will last forever. It's almost worth the weight after going through so many outboard bearings.

Pros: Long lasting, classic strength.

Cons: Heavy.

This bottom bracket performs fine. I've had one on my daily rider for over two years with no problems. Like everyone else, I was apprehensive about the plastic cup, but it's held up fine. The major downside to the plastic isn't longevity, it's that it's a pain to install because the bottom bracket tool's teeth slip off a lot more than on a metal cup which has little or no flex, which means you run the risk of stripping the splines on the plastic cup and not being able to install it. Once it's in, it works well enough, but next time I'll be getting something else.

Pros: Cheap, spins fine after a year

Cons: Plastic cup makes it challenging to install

Good ol' square taper

I mostly use square taper cranks, since they are super reliable, cheap, I have a bunch, and I've never seen any stiffness benefits that the pundits proclaim for the splined or external style.

Pros: Cheap, durable, works fine.

Cons: Not going to win any weight weenie awards.

big bang for the buck

I rode this bb for 2 years on my Surly Big Dummy. I don't own a car, so everything I do is by bike. Not only errands but touring too. After 2 years I decided to replace the very worn out drivetrain. At only a few bucks, may as well replace the BB while I have the bike completely torn apart.

this bb was still good after at least 30k miles.

Pros: economical, reliable

Cheap bottom bracket holds up well

I got this for a bike I didn't think I'd end up riding much, but I ride it all the time. It feels pretty junky and flimsy compared to other bb's, especially the plastic cup. A year or so later it's working fine. I mean arguably you should just spend $10 more dollars for the next one up, but if money is tight this one does the job.

Pros: Very cheap, problem free so far.

Cons: A little tricky to install. You can't get the plastic cup super tight because the metal tool that interfaces with the cup starts to stretch out the plastic when you apply a lot of torque. But works fine anyhow.

Good value

I have had this part installed in an older bike that I ride around town.

It installed perfectly.
Came with new screws to attach crank arms to spindle.
Came well lubricated.

It has held up this summer with no maintenance issues. You aren't going to win any races, but it is a good replacement part for a lower tier bike.

Pros: Installs easily.

Cons: Plastic.
