Ride more! I got these and now that I don't have to put on my riding shoes, I ride more on a whim than before. They have a nice retro look, are super grippy, and solid as a rock. Now if I can just stop trying to clip in when I take off from a stoplight.... Pros: Attractive, strong (they only LOOK like rat-cage pedals, much stronger), not as heavy as I expected, fit my big size 12's fine. Nicest pedals I'ved owned. I got the Sylvan tour pedals for my ogre feet (track pedals were uncomfortable). Sylvan touring pedals are wide enough for my 10½ WIDE feet.
They are actually easier to use with toe clips, despite not having the little tooth to grab on to, to flip the pedal over.
They do come the bearings a little over tighten and very stingy on the grease. So, expect to adjust them and add some grease out of the box.
They are user adjustable, which a great feature!
They also look great on my bicycle too. Pros: Made in Japan, user serviceable, handsome, solid. Cons: Bearings come a little over tighten/rough, almost no grease in bearings. Not sealed. MKS is great for commuting Was using Neuvo Keirin Pedals for years on a commuter. Went to these b/c of the wider footbed. Work wonderfully for getting me back and forth to the office. Pros: Stout, stable feel. Cons: Bearings were a little tight coming out of the package, but I bet they'll loosen up in a month or two. MKS Sylvan touring pedals I ordered these to replace the factory pedals on a Trek Mamba . Pros: Very smooth and I'm hoping trouble free
Easy to place shoes on edges Cons: none Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: May 10, 2012 Reviewed by: Hal H., Oregon Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
the best I've installed two sets of these pedals on two different bikes. I ride my bikes pretty hard, commuting every day, year round. After years of abuse, both set of pedals still look and work great. Pros: Good looking.
Durable. Cons: None. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: May 10, 2012 Reviewed by: Otis, Portland, OR Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
MKS Sylvan Touring Pedals Well made pedal. However the contact surface area of this pedal is not as great as I had thought. The serrated panels are 93 mm in length. From the crank arm to the actual contact area of the pedal the length is 107mm. The width from serrated part is 60 mm. In addition to this they were slippery with five tens and with tennis shoes. Pegged type flat pedals give much better grip. Weight was 388 grams for both pedals. I ordered two pair of these, one pair my wife and I both tried and were not satisfied, the other pair we will send back. However since I will be keeping one pair I took a file and deepened the serations on the serrated panels and it increased the "grippiness". Still not as grippy as pegged flats so it was a lesson in life. Pros: Good quality, looks good, light weight Cons: Not very grippy, not as big as I was hoping for. Great pedals I thought a pedal, was a pedal, was a pedal until I got these. Very smooth and great grip with any shoes. Pros: Smooth, with great grip for any shoes. Cons: Not cheap, but worth any penny. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: August 21, 2011 Reviewed by: Mark G. Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Cool Vintage Looking Pedal These are a solid, well made pedal for a reasonable price. They're great if you're going for that vintage steel bike look. However, the pedal bearings are not greased very well. They had a very thin coat of grease and the bearings were not adjusted correctly. I recommend repacking the bearings with fresh grease and properly tighten the bearings before you use them. Pros: Cool vintage design, solid construction, good price. Cons: Bearings were under-greased and not tightened properly. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: August 16, 2011 Reviewed by: Joseph B., SE Portland Was this review Helpful? Awesome pedal I am now a convert from clipless pedals. These pedals are so liberating. I don't have to wear bike specific shoes anymore. I still might use my clipless, but probably not. These pedals are sturdy, spin smooth and are reasonably priced. I bought the black ones and they look great. Pros: Good construction
good price

MKS Sylvan Touring Pedals I got the black, and they are simple, understated pedals. The teeth grip regular shoes well, but I don't think I'll keep these as my long term pedal choice. I'm used to clipless systems, and will probably go with a hybrid. Pros: Realitively inexpensive, understated. Cons: Heavy, basic.
