Expensive but worth it Gore cable systems are great, I would recomend only the low friction (LF) type, other wise you are are paying a lot of money for nothing new. Cables are sealed very well from the elements. Super smooth shifting from these. Pros: Smooth shifting Cons: Expensive Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: March 01, 2013 Reviewed by: Jason A., Connecticut Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Wasn't impressed Tried these on my Salsa Casseroll which I ride year-round in Portland, OR. They seemed to require a lot more force when shifting than traditional Shimano cables and housing, though it did get a bit better as the cables broke in. Given the high price I'd rather just replace my traditional cables and housing 2-3 times a year than buy another set of these. Cons: Very expensive, not much better than traditional cables and housing Would Buy Again: No Would Recommend: No Reviewed on: October 20, 2012 Reviewed by: Scott G., Oregon Was this review Helpful? Cable System I am a huge fan of the GORE fully sealed cable system for off road bikes. So I thought I'd try this system. I'm thoroughly, not that impressed. First, they (somewhat like the fully sealed system) don't provide enough of the hardware (ferrules, etc.). I don't understand why for almost $50, you can't get an extra cap or two. Second, this system is really no better than any other out there. I don't understand why GORE wouldn't use they're brilliant design (fully sealed) on the road bikes as well. Their cables are sill OK, but the low friction coating seems to peel off when the cable is clamped. The housings are mediocre, but I've seen stiff out of shimano or even jagwire. Pros: Ample color choices. Low friction. Cons: Cheap on the little parts, no extras, sometimes not enough. Cable coating peels at the clamp site. Housings are not the stiffest. Wow but $$$ So I've never had cables like this before. my poor bike had to live in a carport of years and subsequently I burned through cables. I got these and haven't had to touch them. I mean period. They shift just as smooth as the day I installed them. I wait and wait and wait and they still haven't stretched. I haven't needed to adjust my derailleurs at all. That's mind bending to me. Pros: Quality is bar none. Shifts just as well on mile 1000 as mile 1. Cons: Price, but if they hold up like they have that may neglect the cost. Expensive yes. Worth it? Perhaps Gore Ride-On cable systems are legendary in the cycling community. Leave it to WL Gore to use their famous Gore-Tex hammer to find yet another problem that looks like a nail.
This system uses a steel cable wrapped in a Gore-Tex low-friction sheath. The Fully Sealed system is particularly interesting for mountain bikes, because the entire length of the cable is protected from the elements by housing.
One thing you can count on is consistent shift performance regardless of the weather.
The worst downside is that these are so much stiffer than regular cables that installation could get sticky. On my Ibis Mojo, the brake line and the rear derailleur housing are zipped very loosely together. However with the fully-sealed system, the shift housing is so much stiffer than the brake line that the whole zip-arrangement ends up being very asymmetric.
Furthermore, the Gore liner can fray as well, and then what do you do with an obnoxiously expensive cable that's coming apart at the seams? Pros: Very low friction, Fully Sealed version is a highly weather-resistant low maintenance system. Cons: Obnoxiously expensive, Gore liner can fray and there are no reasonably priced options to replace a cable with frayed lining.
