These are nice brakes. I also have a set of Avid Single Digit 5's. If there's a functional difference between them it's too subtle for me to feel, but the 7's have a nicer finish and come with replaceable cartridge pads. The noodle might be a bit nicer too. short of running disc brakes, I think these are the best bang for the buck! I'm a clydesdale, and stopping is important! These brakes are powerful even with just a single finger on the lever. Matched with kool stop pads provides 90% of the stopping power of cable discs at 50% the weight and cost. Even with kool stop pads there can be significant wear to the rims when traveling through muddy/mucky conditions. Pros: Cheap and effective. Cons: Watch the wear on the rims. Reliable V-brake set up. Nothing wrong with Vs as long as they're set up right. Black finish looks good on modern bikes. Avid Vs rock. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: January 21, 2012 Reviewed by: Ranier D., Germania Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
Touring Brakes I am using these on a recent touring build and am EXTREMELY happy!
I almost went with the BB7 disc brakes and am very glad I went with these just for their simplicity alone. Pros: Great stopping power Cons: Cheap pads, but not horrible. Very good stopping power and not too expensive. Very nice finish as well. Pros: Pretty and comes with cartridge brake pads. Comes in black. Taken beating, still stop me. I have three sets of these on three bikes. Use two to race, and one for commuter, and have never had issues at all with stopping power during any of my races for the last 3-4 years. AVID pads work in the beginning, but wear fast and can squeal when they become worn. I replaced with sever different Kool Stop products and those last a bit longer and have better stopping feel to them. Aside from the pads, these brakes have a nice feel to them, and when paired with SD7 levers, you can get a beautiful braking feel on your ride. I have recently experimented with disc BB7 brakes, but I will always use these on my commuter due to the easy of installation, adjustment, and look. Pros: nice feel, like the color, brake very well. Cons: Pads wear fast and can make a lot of noise if not toed-in. Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: January 24, 2011 Reviewed by: Mark K., Texas Was this review Helpful? Won me back I have had slipping faith in Avid brakes and these have renewed my trust. No these are not for Down Hill crazies.... but perfect for many types of rides. Pros: Simple, durable, servicable, strong with good stopping power, and inexpensive! Cons: modulation on the brake boss Would Buy Again: Yes Would Recommend: Yes Reviewed on: November 17, 2010 Reviewed by: Tour guy, Colorado Was this review Helpful? Yes No Report as Inappropriate
I really like these brakes. Installed them myself with no problems and I am no expert wrench. Easy to adjust and huge improvement over my old cantis. powerful and cheap. Pros: most cost effective V brakes made. Cons: The pads are absolutely worthless. Order some kool stop inserts and throw the stock rim stranglers in the trash upon opening the box.
