These are much nicer than the steel ones I used to use years ago. They're plastic, which may not be as durable, but they don't rust (an excellent feature for western Oregon winters.) The friction bands on the inside of the barrel keep the caps stuck to the shifter housing, but allow me to pull the caps off if I need to replace the housing (or shorten it.) And (I bought a bulk lot of end caps) the pill bottle dispenser lid on the jar that they came in makes it easy to shake one or two out (instead of trying to coax only one or two out of a regular jar. Lightweight, no problems to speak of. Just make sure you get the right size for your application - narrower for shift cable, wider for brake cables.
