Yes, lock rings wear out once the wavy ring becomes flat.

Sram Lockring Sram makes excellent products all the way to the smallest on thought of parts. I lock ring. As sram does, excellent quality. From so many lockrings to chose from. Sram is the way to go. Replacement has lasted well, but original stripped threads quite easily. Alternatives seem to have stronger threads and deeper teeth for tool grip. Simple Locking System These are super simple and easy to use. No problem getting the torque right - just put a socket on the spline tool and dial it in.
